Diamond Beach — Iceland

Diamond Beach is one of Iceland’s most extraordinary natural spectacles — crystal icebergs resting on black basalt sand.

Diamond Beach is one of Iceland’s most iconic sights. Located on the south coast beside the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, this black sand beach receives icebergs every day as they drift from the lagoon into the ocean.

The result is surreal: translucent blocks of ice, sculpted by the ocean into impossible shapes, scattered across black sand like diamonds on velvet. With every wave, the landscape changes. You never see the same beach twice. The best light We arrived at sunrise, before anyone else. The golden October light transformed the icebergs into lanterns — each block with its own shade of blue and turquoise. When the sun touched the horizon, the reflection on the wet sand doubled the spectacle. What to bring — Waterproof boots. The sand is always wet and the waves are unpredictable. — A wide-angle lens, such as 16-35mm, to include beach, ice and sky in one composition. — A macro lens for the details in the ice — air bubbles trapped for centuries, marks carved by water. — Patience. The beach gets busy during the day. Arrive early or stay until dusk. Wildlife On the rocks around the lagoon, grey seals rest in the sun with complete indifference to tourists. With some luck, and a lot of silence, it is possible to approach without disturbing them. Jökulsárlón is only a few steps away. A boat trip across the lagoon among drifting icebergs is essential — and a starting point for understanding the scale of what you see on the beach.
